This week we are going to focus on Resiliency and Grit and what it takes to be "unbroken."
Let's start with John Wooden. Coach Wooden states, "Make greatness attainable by all."
On a sports team, at work, school, or at home, it takes the contributions of the entire team to be great. You hear a lot of NFL teams talk about the importance of only being as good as the 53rd player… meaning it takes all of us playing as one to be great. Since this is the case, we then need you to not only want to work hard, live pure, lead with courage, and honor your team… but more importantly we need you wanting that and encouraging that in all 80 of us out there. Every team member needs to be strong. People want to succeed and they want to be great. Make sure you give them an opportunity… be a better “Giver than Getter"... be an encourager and honor one another and honor the team.
Check out this short clip:
http://www.wingclips.com/movie-clips/unbroken/i-believe-in-you
Here are 5 things all great leaders have:
1. They care deeply about their team.
2. They are passionate about justice and have a strong sense of right and wrong.
3. They confront fear and take risks.
4. They lead without a title.
5. They recognize they are a component of the team and not the main event.
What does it take for someones spirit to be broken? How do some stand firm while others crumble? In football some fail because it's too hot or they are tired, or they just don't feel like working hard and running to the ball and giving effort and finish the play like they can and should all because of how you feel. In the clip above Louie Zamperini states "I don't believe in myself". but his brother believed in him and believed Louie could develop mental and physical toughness.
So each one of us have to develop this mental and physical toughness to be able sustain what we do on the field, in the classroom and at home at a high level.
My challenge for each of us this week is this... do not let failure define you. Fail forward and learn. The faster you fail the fast you can correct those mistakes and get better. So just because you got beat on the last play you can not let it affect the next play. Do not let your failures or the challenges in you life cause you frustration. I believe our biggest set backs in life and on the field are a beautiful setup for glorious comebacks. Together as one let's be unbroken! I am proud of you all!
